How do I track tasks completed in a non-linear time line?

by "Ultrus" <owntheweb@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Mar 2, 2007 at 05:20 PM

In my quest to understand the dreaded RPG better (only because it's
big), I'm curious about how data or sequence of events is stored/
tracked in a non-linear storyline. How does the game know that I need
to get a special blend from the half baked baker, before I present a
big feast at the annual farm festival? How does the game know that I
get the silver medal at the farm festival instead of a gold medal,
because I raised a Yak in the plains instead of the rain forest? How
would I structure an array (or whatever) to keep track of this task
while keeping track of the other tasks/time line gates at hand, at the
same time?

I'm not asking how to make a full RPG. That's made up of too many
questions for one post. I'm just trying to get started on the
storyline progress tracking of things.

Thank you ahead of time for the great feedback. I will be glad do
clarify anything if needed.

:)
