The usual advice on projects is this: work on something small.
Finish it. Work on something larger. Finish it. Keep growing your
projects until you can get a good idea of how to do your next project.
Commercial games like football sims are a LOT of work. I'd really
advise you to start off with something smaller. Write your own version
of Pong. Then try and do a 'Pong Sim', where you give the two players
different stats, such as paddle size/speed, reactions, etc. Work your
way up from there.
