The Sims, Evil Genius, and Black & White all come to mind as
interesting building games. Of course, there are all those 'Tycoon'
games as well.
If you want something online and free to try out, have you looked at
Gunbound? GB is a colorful multiplayer artillery game with some
strategy to it (each mobile that you ride/shot with has different
characteristics) and the ability to customize/power up by adding
equipment and banners to your boy or girl avatar. You can get a lot of
game play out of GB without paying a dime.
I doubt that Softnyx's other online game Rakion would appeal to you,
but then if you like to try a free medieval 3rd person combat games
with a strong team play element, you might want to give that a try. Of
course, GB and Rakion can be terribly addictive and I literally have to
uninstall them from time to time so I can get some work done at home.
