Not understanding it does not mean you shouldn't get a lawyer and talk to
trademark owners before using somebody's trademark. You can't just notify
a
trademark owner after the fact, "hey, I used your trademark and credited
you, it was a free advertisement, so you can thank me now." It doesn't
work
that way. Nathan's reply did include information as to why permission
needs
to be sought beforehand.

Good idea. Not using the trademarks is the best way to go.
