Not necessary. It's easier to just take notes on paper anyway.
Exceptions: A laptop IS necessary for SOME people going to GDC, DEPENDING
on
their intent. If you intend to impress (read "bore") folks with your demo
or
digital ****tfolio, or if you're speaking and will be projecting Powerpoint
slides, then a laptop makes a lot of sense.

Then don't install it until you get it home to your desktop.
