You might get more response to these kinds of posts in
comp.games.development.design. That said, the c.g.d.* hierarchy has a
weak pulse.

Let players beam each other with the basketballs. But, attach no
penalty to getting hit by a basketball whatsoever. Just an animation
that goes "Ow!" and makes the player look humiliated somehow. The
game mechanic here is it's fun to beat the snot out of your buddies,
but the tradeoff is it's just a distraction from what you should be
doing to win the game. Win the game or humiliate your buddies? Which
would you rather do? A lot of people won't be able to help
themselves, they'll beam their buddies. They might even beam their
buddies when they're ahead, thinking they're "safe" to get away with
it, and thereby allow their buddies to catch up.

Whenever my friend and I would get bored playing Halo, we'd just start
shooting each other. It didn't actually matter, but it was way more
interesting than some boring sprawling level we'd gotten lost in.
