I played Age of Kings and The Conquerors on my old Win98SE PC for years.
Then when I got my Win XP home edition PC about 1.5 years ago I installed
them both. They run fine. No special XP patch was applied (or exists as
far
as I know). I did apply the patch at the Ensemble Studios site. But that
has
nothing to do with XP. It just cleans up some bugs and changes the costs
of
a few buildings (example: Town Centers now cost some stone). See the
Ensemble Studios site for the dozens of little things this patch cleans
up.
I think its called version 1.0C or something like that. But I used that
same patch when I was running the games on Win98 SE.
I believe I've heard some people complain that they have problems if they
aren't the "administrator" on an WinXP PC. And I think I've heard some
people say they are running the games on WinXP office or pro (or whatever
the other edition is called) without problems.
You may want to elaborate on what you meant by "won't work." Also, if you
don't get good responses here try newsgroups microsoft.public.ageofempires
and/or microsoft.public.games.ageofkings. I'm no techno-geek so I've told
you all I know. If its a PC incompatibility problem (video drivers/card,
etc.) perhaps someone else can assist if you specify the error messages
you're receiving.
