He won a controversial B.C. Open by beating the great Ed Wylie. The
controversy surrounded the fact that Cliff paid Ed's expenses to play
in Tacoma. Several players who I also knew felt that Ed may have let
Cliff win; I don't know. I do know that Cliff was very strong and
also that he idolized Wylie. I think the win may have surprised him as
much as the others. In my opinion, no one in B.C. could have beaten
Wylie, period.
