That's quite a strong test; my standard test when doing reviews for my
website ( www.chungkuo.org ; shameless plug) is rather straightforward.
It is to run against Martin Fierz's "Simple Checkers" - that really
separates the ones with potential from the mere wannabes.
In fact, outside of the truly serious tier (which I define as Sage on
up) I have found only a few programs that can keep up with Simple
Checkers (namely Damas 99, Wincheck, and Blitz, which was at one time in
the top echelon but then was replaced by Sage). Just about all the
rest, including not just a few with high pretensions, go down in flames.
Simple Checkers is open source and very easy to understand and should be
required study for all potential checker program authors.
By the way, and unrelated, I do lament (now that I have a Palm) the
complete lack of anything with any serious playing ability for that
platform. If I have missed a strong contender somewhere, I'd love to
know about it! In fact, I was thinking about ****ting Simple to the Palm
some time.....
