They are *very* popular and have drawn a lot of folks back to DAoC, as
well as attracting newbies. Gareth is nearly maxed out most nights and
Lamorak usually has 1800 to 2000 playing. RvR is very balanced on
these two as well.

Then you probably won't like ToA much if hunting with just one or two
friends.
ToA is OK if you like high level PvE raiding. It had a big unbalancing
effect on RvR though. You will want ML's and Artifacts to compete in
RvR. The trouble with ToA was it was an expansion for the wrong game
IMHO. If it had been a high level raiding expansion for EQ it would
have been fine.The unbalancing affect on RvR between the cat***** and
the more normal an hour or two a night person is what made it nearly
break the game.

No. You have to buy the North American box.
But you don't have to but any box though now, as Mythic US offer the
entire game, right up to the new Darkness Rising expansion, as digital
downloads.
There is fourteen day free trial you can download to try out the
classic servers, and if you decide you do like them and want to stay
you can upgrade all the way to the new Darkness Rising expansion due
for release on the 11th.

In your early forties you shouldn't have trouble on the UK servers.
That's high enough to get groups and do Leirvik, the last
battleground. You will probably want a bot account and ML's/Aritfacts
from ToA to compete on an even footing in RvR though.
Personally I love the classic servers. No buffbots and far less
advantage to the cat*****. I shut down my two Euro accounts and I'm
having a blast on the classic servers. It's just like the old days,
great fun.
Use the fourteen day free trial to try out the classic servers and see
if they are suited to you and your friends.
