There are three classic severs.
Gareth, Lamorak and Ector.
So if it starts with G and it's classic, it be Gareth :). Pity as I am
on Hibernia on Gareth otherwise I'd show you the ropes and get you off
to a flying start. I am Midgard on Lamorak. And I don't play Ector
much ;).
>Is there any limit on the number of characters you can have on one

No you can fill you character slots on each server. But you cannot mix
realms on the same server. So if you have created a Midgard Troll on
Gareth then all your other characters on Gareth must be in Midgard as
well. To play another realm you can simply make characters on another
server. For example, on the classic servers I play:
Hibernia on Gareth (so all my characters must be Hibs)
Midgard on Lamorak (so all my characters must be Mids)
Albion on Ector (so all my characters must be Albs)
It's a bit more confusing on the other servers, as they are clustered,
apart from the Cooperative server, the PvP server and the test server.
I'll start with these.
Gaheris - an interesting server where the Realms are not at war, hence
you can freely travel to other realms and group with character cl*****
from other realms and play cooperatively with them. So you could have
a Midgard Troll warrior grouped with an Albion Avalonian Cleric and a
Elven Hibernian Enchanter, and the group can go anywhere in the three
realms to hunt. This server was created for folks who like to PvE but
don't much care to RvR or PvP.
Mordred - A PvP server. Basically the opposite of Gaheris. Out and out
PvP where you can be killed on sight by any other player after you
reach a certain level. Not very popular and tends to be the kiddies
who like to think they are 'leet' and want to pwn you and other such
nonsense. Some folks just like the challenge of all out PvP though but
the mature ones who enjoy this type of play are not probably not
playing much DAoC as other games cater for this better.
Pendragon - The test server. You can copy any of your characters
across to this server. When I say copy I don't mean the character
moves from its original server, but rather a clone is made. This is
where Mythic test pending version upgrades and patches before letting
them loose on the other servers. Only played on by folks who want to
help test stuff and are curious to find out about changes early.
Next are the clustered servers. They consist of two types, standard
rule set and role playing. Rules are tighter on role play servers as
to naming etc. and folks *will* expect you to stay in character,
especially if you join a role play focused guild.
The clusters go as follows:
Tintagel cluster (role play rule set)
Guinivere
Percival
Nimue
Caeleon cluster (standard)
Pellinor
Lancelot
Kay
Iseult
Killbury cluster(standard)
Merlin
Bors
Gawaine
Palomides
Devon cluster (standard)
Morgan-Le-Fay
Galahad
Igraine
Bedevere
Tristan
Servers were clustered when population levels dropped to make it
easier for folks to group on servers that had low populations.
Remember DAoC is four years old and although it is still popular
server populations have dropped on the standard old servers.
Population drops on every MMORPG over time as folks leave for personal
reasons, move to another MMORPG because they have done it all in DAoC,
or because they want to try the ****ny new MMORPG that has just come
out. WoW for example took a lot of folks away from other MMORPGs when
it was launched, but folks start drifting back once they get bored
with WoW or whatever. So populations on MMORPGs do fluctuate for many
reasons. Winter is also more active than summer for obvious reasons,
so you are joining at the right time. Season doesn't affect us Brits
much though, lol ;).
This won't affect you much as you are new, but when the servers were
clustered folks had characters on different realms but in the same
cluster. For example I had characters in Albion on Pellinor, Hibernia
on Lancelot and Midgard on Kay. These all became joined to form the
Caerleon cluster. As DAoC is a Realm versus Realm game and with the
PvP having an effect on the game world through relic owner****p and
castle sieging and capturing, Darkness Falls owner****p etc. cheating,
in the form of spying had to be avoided, so a one hour log-in timer on
clustered servers if you change server (realm) applies. I hope this
makes sense. It will become clearer once you understand RvR more.

Ahem, it's Midgard, not Midguard. A common newbie mistake but your
fellow trolls will eat you if you keep getting it wrong in-game ;).
And them pretty Norse ladies won't flirt with you.
Yes they are more pronounced later on as Midgard is based on
Scandinavian mythology and religion. Hibernia is based on Celtic
mythology and religion and Albion on Arthurian mythology and its
Christian overtones. Although if Arthur actually existed it was in
immediate post Roman Britain, or dark ages and he certainly wasn't a
Christian. That came later with the medieval grail Romances, given
form by Chretien de Troyes and fleshed out and added to by the likes
of Geoffrey of Monmouth, Wolfram Von Eschenbach, Gottfried von
Strassburg through Thomas Mallory's epic "Le Morte D'Arthur" and on to
Alfred Lord Tennyson and the modern era. I digress though :).
You will notice a huge variation in zones between the three realms as
well. However there are only so many quest types that can be done.
Kill type quests, delivery type quests, searching type quests and a
mixture etc. There are Epic quests as well and Realm quests. The new
expansion will also introduce champion quests. It's mainly the
Mythology of the realm and the uniqueness of the zones that give the
quests their flavour. Some are tedious, some are great fun, some are
simply ok. Some can be soloed whilst some need a group, or a battle
group.
Forgive me for any errors or if this is a tad unclear as I'm dog
tired, been killing Albs all night and the old noggin is not working
too well at the moment.
