I have an old savegame, which still works without
crashes.
I installed the basic DF and let my character join
every guild and order, that I could think of. I then
added the 213 patch and continued, to see if the game
would 'protest'
or crash, but it didn't. I never had any use for
neither item
maker or potion makers, since I got an ample supply
of
bodies and piles of loot in dungeons.
The only real difference between the knightly orders
were,
that it was the only way to get quests, tied to local
dungeons. That - or quests from people in that region.
The only self-made jobs I did, was enchanted weapons,
and armor, using the smith's service plus the mage
guilds
