No idea where to post this but alt.games.redalert doesn't exist anymore=20
and figuring this out was NOT easy by googling for info.
Last weekend a friend and mine just had to play the good old "Hills=20
have no eyes" Aftermath scenario. Earlier on we had installed Windows=20
ME just to be able to play the old C&C games but with the newer mobos=20
that don't boot up ME this was not an option.
Getting IPX to work on XP with the oldest games is a real dog although=20
we succeeded with some of the newer ones. I know there is a 3.03 patch=20
out there that is supposed to fix things but we didn't get it to work=20
(had the Red Alert CD but not the Aftermath CD).
So we finally resorted to finding a COM port emulator just hoping that=20
approach might work. The post we got the idea from referred to some=20
software we couldn't get to work and we then tried several in rapid=20
succession. Until we stumbled on this :

Setup was a breeze and the only thing we had to realize was that you=20
actually had to click on another tab to make the other computer a COM=20
server. Other than that you pretty much just gave the ip address to=20
make a COM2 virtual port, fired up red Alert with a multiplay/direct=20
cable option and avot, Lobby wooooorrrks! Several hours and not a=20
glitch.
Time to play the good old original too (talking C&C, not Dune :). And I=20
haven't played Command HQ in decades, maybe that works too :D
Hopefully I can amke this come up high enough in Google to help other=20
unfortunates too.=20
