Other than when they are founded, religions in CIV4 are all the same.
There isn't any difference between them as far as benefits go. The
benefits you get from them will vary based mostly on your civics.
If you don't have a state religion, you get +1 culture / turn from
each religion in a city (+5 culture / turn if it's the holy city for
that religion).
If you do have a state religion, then that religion will give a +1
culture bonus (+5 for the holy city) and a +1 happiness bonus to each
city that has it. Other religions in a city will have no effect.
And with free religion, you get a +1 culture, +1 happy bonuses from
each religion in a city.
Each religion will also allow you to build the associated temple,
monastery, and cathedral for that religion, as long as you have the
necessary techs for those buildings.
You can build the shrine for a religion by using a great prophet in
the holy city for that religion, and that city will then earn 1 gold
for each city that has that religion.
Finally, you'll get a positive bonus to diplomacy for AIs that have
the same state religion as you, and a negative from those that have a
different state religion. The amount varies based mostly on the
leader's personality. Isabella, for example, is a religious nut.
She'll love you if you're the same religion and hate you if you're
not.
Try going to the Religion screen (F7), and mousing over the different
religions. That will show you the bonuses each religion would give
you in each city with your current civics.
