To be honest, I'm not quite sure what smartmap is.

I did have some lucky breaks, after all: My unpromoted warrior surviving
the
attack by that barbarian spearman, for starters. Hammurabi's conversion to
my religion instead of Montezuma's the moment one of his cities
spontaneously got my religion. And above all the total failure of Huayna's
pretty modern invasion force to kill a single member of my garrison. He
attacked with nine troops, three of them infantry, two of them cannon, one
of them rifleman, and I had less than nine defending troops. And yet, they
shot down his invaders like partridges. Of course, after all those
barbarian
invasions and wars, many of my tropps had almost ridiculously many
promotions. One of the longbowemen had city defender two and one ordinary
strength point, and perhaps also (I am not sure) the ability to strike
first
twice. I took care to upgrade it as soon as I had the money, because it
gained another promotion from the failed invasion.

So how did it go?
