Here's my opinion.  Read the whole thread to get opinions of the
misguided. :)

Wait a sec -- you posted to that thread.  Nothing has changed since then.

It's really not that difficult to try out several early strategies and see
how
far you progress in the first 50 turns using each one.


As to building a settler very early, that is clearly a mistake at the
highest
levels.  The point of an extra city is that you essentially get +2 food. 
You
can get more from a worker early on.  When you add in the civic costs, I
don't
see how it can ever be right to build a settler before your first worker
unless your capital has no food squares to work, in which case you might
as
well start a new game.
