I thought civ2 and civ3 were just waystations on the way to the real game,
civ4.  "Vastly improved" is correct.


The biggest change is carryover, meaning that in a large variety of
situations
you do not need to micromanage nearly as much.  In addition, giving
workers 2
movement points instead of 1 makes a huge difference in stopping the AI
from
doing lots of stupid things with them.


I don't even remember civ3 any more.  Does it have the rock-paper-scissors
aspects of various units having advantages versus each other?  That leads
to
lots of interesting tactics and strategy.


Also, they finally got artillery mostly right, attacking entire stacks at
a
time.  Stacks of doom are no longer no-brainers.
