Not sure, but that sounds like it could be a video driver issue.
Make sure you're using the latest drivers for your video card.
I had a similar issue with original Civ4 when it first came out,
except it was enabling the grid that caused a crash. Updating the
driver for my video card fixed it.

No problems here with the latest patch for Warlords (version 2.13),
but then I haven't played Warlords alot since BTS.
What version were you updating to? I seriously doubt it deleted a
needed file, Firaxis is not Sierra! :)
Could also be a video driver issue, if it just won't start. Or maybe
something went wrong with the updater. Try to download the patch
here:

and apply it yourself.
