Joanne, you may want to consider news.individual.net which is a free 
text groups only server run by some university in Berlin.  It has both 
groups you are missing from your ISP's newsfeed.  To register, just go 
to http://news.individual.net
and you'll see the registration link.  It 
took 4-5 days for my registration to go through, but believe me it's 
worth it for the reduction in spam on these groups due to their no 
attachments policy.
