Carmageddon -hires, strange video problem?

by Stil <me@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Dec 11, 2003 at 03:52 PM

I was recently struck by the urge to play Carmageddon 1 again. One
problem: I no longer have a 3dfx card installed in any system.

I thought it wouldn't be a problem since there's a -hires option and an
athlon should run it ok. However, the display comes up and is severely
distorted. It's pretty hard to describe how, but I'll try... If you
cut each line into quarters horizontally, then stretch each quarter so
that it is just as wide as the screen, then start each quarter at it's
correct position and wrap it around the screen when it reaches the right
side. It looks like you interlaced 4 completely different frames. This
occurs for every part of the game, including the opening movies. Needless
to say the game is unplayable in this mode. If I don't use the -hires
option it plays fine. The commands I've tried are:
    carma.exe -hires
    carmav.exe -hires -novoodoo.

Here's the basics for my system:
Windows 98se
ASUS motherboard (A7V333?)
Athlon 1400
512 MB
SB Audigy 1 MP3
ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon
+ assorted drives.

All drivers are current for dos and windows. It acts completely the same
whether I run it from a DOS window, rebooting in DOS mode, or use a DOS
boot disk.

This is bugging me to no end. I've been looking for solutions for about
a week and the best I can come up with is trying to install the Voodoo2
card in parallel with the Radeon, which kinda seems like a major letdown.

I can find no references to other people having the same problem with any
card let alone a radeon. Nor can I find any list of program options for
carma.exe that may change the output. My only option that seems
reasonable
is a Glide wrapper, but there are none that work for DOS games under DOS
or
windows. Glidos appears to work, but it's so crippled that it's
impossible
to test how well it works without paying the money first, contrary to the
author's own suggestion about testing first since it doesn't work on all
machines.

Are there any command line options that I could be overlooking? Anybody
have any other suggestions I can try?
