These settings in render.cfg solved this for me:
; from http://www.theoutcasts.org/modules.php?name=Bzfaq
[NormalView]
VisibilityScale=150 // Extend visibility to 150% of normal
HiRes=1 // Enable 800x600 and higher
[d3d]
; from bz2 render.cfg
// Disable half-texel correction (correction may blur text on some
boards)
// this is on by default, disabled for ATI, S3-S540, Voodoo1, S3-S540
(This option
// may be different depending on depending on your drivers.)
// Experiment until text is not blury.
;HalfTexel = 0
; bz default halftexel=1
halftexel=0

This seems to be caused by having a different desktop resolution and
colour setting to the settings in the game.
What I did was to change the above settings in render.cfg, set the
desktop to 800x600x16, go into battlezone. Change the resolution in
bz to 800x600. Change the texel setting in render.cfg if you have to.
When 800x600 is working, exit the game. Set the desktop to 1024x768,
go into battlezone. Change the resolution in bz to 1024x768, exit the
game. Now hopefully you can play bz at 1024x768.
Here is my complete render.cfg, note that halftexel=1. This setting
differs from video card to video card:
[NormalView]
VisibilityScale=150 // Extend visibility to 150% of normal
HiRes=1 // Enable 800x600 and higher
[Debug]
TrackFPS = 1 //Display FPS and polygon count
[D3D]
Zbuffer=1 //Used for 1024x768 if more then 4MB of video memory is
availible.
TripleBuffer=0 //Change to 1 to improve speed on cards with 8MB of
video memory.
;Leave zero for Voodoo.
MipMaps=1 //Enable hardware MIPMAPing
; LargeAssets=1 // Use ENHANCED large textures
;PreLoad=1 //Pre-load all textures before mission start. Only set if
there is 9MB of
;texture memory (not Voodoo2!)
;loadsprites=1 //This will preload all the sprites. Use this if you
do not have
;enough memory to preload all textures.
;RadarType=7 //Draw radar as lines instead of textured poly. Use
this setting on AGP
;machines if the framerate is jerky.
;halftexel=1 //use this setting if your text is garbled
(Rendition/Nvidea)
halftexel=1
;alpha=0 //turns off 16bit assets with alpha blending. Use on ATI or
other cards that do
;not filter alpha assets.
SplitZBuffer=1 //If sniper camera is green
I finally got that to quit by
