This sounds like a problem with insufficient video RAM because the
graphics card can't hold all of the textures. But your AGP Nvidia
Geforce2 MX400 would have 32, 64 or 128 Mb RAM which should be plenty.

Try using the mouse instead of the joystick, or updating the joystick
drivers.

It's a great game, and in some ways better than BattleZone II.
