What kind of video settings are you using? It may be that they are using
lower video settings that actually make it easier to spot enemies from
longer distances. With higher details you'll have to look very hard
sometimes to distinguish soldier from the background having shadows and
all.

Well of course I usually can't hear footsteps in the middle of the
battle and I'm easy target for backstabbers, but when I'm sneaking
around a flag and it's relatively quiet I can hear them quite well. I'll
just have to stop for a moment and listen so that my own
equipment/walking noise doesn't disturb me.
