You can turn "lightning" setting to low so that all shadows disappear.
That's LOW but I guess it's how majority of BF2 players play the game...
Points and wins before eye candy, right?
Regarding "anyone can see me", I have X-Fi Xtremegamer soundcard and I
use headphones when I play. Usually I can hear footsteps before enemy
pops out behind the corner :-)

I guess you are newbie with this game? Some/most servers have many Pr0
players playing and it can be quite painful even for experienced players
to stay alive. But when you find a "noob" server it's blasting fun when
everyone are bad players :-)

Like I said, they can too be using "superior" sound hardware and they
can hear your footsteps. So buy X-Fi Xtremegamer and good headphones and
you can do it also :-)
