yes, it seems like it was the problem, my PC was unstable due to having a
very finnicky motherboard as to what ram it will run and possibly
something or other didnt install properly because of a system crash, so I
did fresh install of XP and BF2142 and its better now, though still need
to run as admin otherwise get punkbuster errors.
