I tried making the Engineer Tinkered Pistol (which levels up with you
to lvl 39) using the various bits, and end product will NOT combine
with a Surge Pistol :( You must use the basic Solar-powered Pistol,
contrary to what I read on a web board, so take a *non-upgraded*
pistol with you when you leave the island. The resulting pistol is
still right-hand only, but anyway, here's a link that let's you see
the stats of the gun from lvl 1 to 39:-

You can MAKE a solar-powered pistol, if you left without one, and I
almost have, even though my Engineer is only lvl 24, but it is a
costly business I can tell you! I rue the day I left the Island
without a basic pistol, sigh]....
