"Airman" is not the same as "Soldier". I don't know what OTS involves
combat-wise, but the only combat training I had in Air Force basic was
firing 30 rounds out of an M-16 rechambered to fire .22s. I was not
expected to hit anything.

(You're the one who said 1st Edition...)
(Note also that there is only *one* L15 Assassin in each AD&D
gameworld; if we have a "Grandfather of Assassins" in the real world,
he's probably *not* a public figure.)
