RAID array. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID
for more info.
Basically, it's a parallel setup of drives, each one a reduntant backup
of every other drive. Thus, the theory is that if one drive fails, the
others in the array continue on working. When you replace a defective
drive, the array ghosts itself onto the new drive and continues on its
merry way.
Another use of a RAID array (I seem to recall having heard about, making
no claims as to its validity) is as a single drive setup, wherein each
drive in the array is used independantly of each other, giving you one
huge mass of storage. Thus, 12 1TB drives in a RAID array could be set
up as 12 redundant 1TB drives, or as 1 fragmented 12TB drive.
The advantage of having the second option is, of course, disk space, but
also speed (ie, data can be accessed 12x faster than a single drive).
Myself, I have no need for a redundant system, so I'd use the massive
drive just to gloat };=8Þ
