Elephant ghosts do make a lot of sense. I've always found their
understanding of death intriguing.  However, since when is a high
level of intelligence required to remain as a ghost?  I would think,
if spirits exist, that it is not commonly a conscious decision to
become one.  I perceived it as more of a subconscious or automatic
reaction to wanting to stay in a certain place for some reason.  Even
an instinct-driven animal like a horse has the mental capacity to
prefer a familiar place over an unknown one.
