The plates being bone means they have sponge-like stucture, so they 
can't be cleaned, so they when not eaten aren't re-useable.  And when 
eaten they aren't re-usable.

I agree that pentadactyl limbs are not optimal.  My hands can reach all 
of me because my shoulders were designed to thus.
