I have some ideas, but really what I think is *going* to happen has very
little to do with what I or any other serious Dragonlance fan has to say.
For example, The Kingpriest Trilogy has been hailed by ALL fans across the
board who have read it, and I think that's no stretch. Yet each book went
almost immediately out of print. I'd say this is a deliberate strategy on
the part of WotC, but I believe WotC is incapable of long-term strategy
and
wants to make as quick a buck as possible. Also, I don't see how it could
possibly benefit them in the long-run, anyway. The next possibility is
that
they sold poorly, but that is clearly not the case, as testified by the
extreme rarity of copies.
The only remaining conclusion I can reach is that WotC is clueless on this
one, plain and simple. They considered it a risky venture, did one print
run of each book, and left it at that, and they're not about to revisit
it.
(Please, Wizards, prove me wrong.)
Wellll..... what remains for the future of DL? Will the Age of Mortals die
off? Probably not just yet. But I don't think anyone who has been watching
DL in the past few years can deny that the War of the Lance era has come
back, to stay. Anyone can see that The Lost Chronicles are a much bigger
hit than Dark Disciple, and I do not doubt that the WotL series of modules
will likewise be better sellers than the AoM ones. Then there are the
Young
Adult books... and of course, the DoAT Movie.
Quite simply, the Age of Mortals builds upon too involved a history for
new
readers to jump into. It's complex. Now it has gunpowder. As I said, I
think it will keep going for a while, probably with INcreasingly rapid
major changes. But I have no doubt the WotL era will become the standard
setting.
I think the upcoming Tracy Hickman Presents The Anvil of Time series--
though they be just standalone novels--will show the shape of Dragonlance
to come. 4th Age based, as I understand it, but touching on both past and
future.
And I can live with that. The post-WotL period is still woefully
inadequately fleshed out, but I'm also curious to see "what happens next"
in the big question mark of the future; and adventures in ancient Krynn
are
always interesting, as well.
Oh, by the way, the other big possibility lies in Taladas, but sadly I
will
venture to guess that, with the Trilogy completed, Taladas will just be
put
right back to sleep, and that's the end of that. (See discussion on
Kingpriest Trilogy, above.) Regards.
