It's just my opinion. I have always found it remarkable that such
diverse characters as Tanis, Caramon, Sturm, Flint, Theros Ironfeld, and
Laurana would all be simply "Fighters" and share almost the exact same
skill sets. I think this was intentional on the part of the designers,
who seemed to wish a simplistic approach in order to encourage character
development through roleplay and creative storytelling.
The more customization, as a gross generalization, the more players tend
to pay attention to their character sheet with all its plusses, and to
metagame and munchkin. In my First Edition games, the players rarely
need to refer to their vague and patchy sheets, too engrossed in the
story. Particularly in a Dragonlance game, the players should probably
not be looking forward to combat too much, but rather looking for ways
to avoid it as much as possible!
Anyway, though I vaguely recall that Tanis sometimes used a bow, I
recall more climactic swordfights involving him than than any other
character in Chronicles. Regards.
