Having run a nostalgic campaign using 3e myself, I agree with you on
the prestige class issue, but I don't see the point of removing skills
and feats. In fact, I think it helped that Tanis could specialize more
in use of bow while Sturm and Caramon developed their melee skills and
feats.

And you are right about the Atlas, of course.
