Hey everyone!
I know this has been an on-again, off-again topic in the newsgroup for
the past 15 years, but something I read recently (wikipedia.org?
dragonlancemovie.com?) reminded me that I had forgotten everything I'd
read about the pronunciations from our authors, because it had listed
Raistlin Majere pronounced as such:
RASS-linn mah-JEER.
Have I been pronouncing it incorrectly for the past 18 years, or what?
I have always read it phonetically, like this:
RAYST-linn (rhymes with 'wastebin') mahge-uh-RAY (rhymes with, uh...
let me think... lodger ray. But without the 'd' in lodger.)
The first name (Raistlin) was always simple. The first syllable is
pronounced phonetically, in English, just like the world "waist."
Raist. It doesn't sound proper if the second syllable is stressed, so
it always made sense that the pronunciation was RAYST-linn.
The last name (Majere) always had a French accent to it to me, despite
no accent over the last character. It's just the way it's spelled.
There are no English words I know of that end with "jere," so my
closest frame of reference is a language that does. Thereby,
mahge-uh-RAY.
The only reason I'm making this post is if it's pronounced all goofy
in the movie, I'll punch my popcorn. Right in its face.
