You are remembering a reference where a kender was told the lake was
deadly poisonous on contact, likely to dissuade said kender from
getting into something he shouldn't.
There have been more generalized references in recent gaming material
to suggest that the lake might have been polluted (and really, that
only makes sense considering its origins). However, I think the most
definitive word is reasonably Lake of Death. After all, even if it was
relatively toxic in the immediate aftermath of its creation, it's only
supernaturally plausible (rather then actually) that it would remain so
over time afterward. From a realistic standpoint, toxicity in water
(even standing lake water) in general only remains ever-present if it
has a constant source.
