Heh, barring commercial considerations, something like this:
Dragonlance post-legends. The Blue Lady's War is over, Kitiara "living"
her chilling fate in Dargaard Keep. The Dragonarmies are still around
in Eastern Ansalon. The Knights of Solamnia are reforming, and the
continent is under an uneasy truce, a "cold war", a cold war that
occassionally and in some areas might get warm. The gods have come
back, and are busy building organizations and cults. The Irda, hidden,
have secret plans. The Orders are dealing with the return of the gods
and the new, less anarchic Ansalon. All this would be presented in a
great sourcebook, including game information as well as clearing up all
the inconsistencies in Krynn's history as presented in DLA, Leaves,
Chronicles and Legends.
>From this setting I would have "someone" create a grand narrative, one
that opens for many side stories. Moving the world forward, but not in
leaps and bounds, it is also founded in history. The founding of the
Orders during the First Dragon War, the minotaur rebellion and the fall
of Kal-Thax as well as the history of the Irda have secret roles to
play. As a deadly secret from the past threaten to overthrow the
balance on Ansalon (but nobody knows about this yet), many things
happen in various parts of the continent. There is intrigue on Mithas
and Kothas, things are happening in Dragonarmy-occupied Nordmaar,
Northern Ergoth grows in im****tance, and for some mysterious reason
Kagonesti elves make dealings with the nomadic humans living on the
northern part of Southern Ergoth. The sea elves notice increased
activity of sea dragons and lacedons (and other evil sea creatures).
Dragonarmy official try to make dealings with Lord Soth in order to
infiltrate the reformed Knights of Solamnia. And some cults of the less
im****tant evil gods plan something without the knowledge of the
priesthood of Takhisis. And what role is there for the Irda to play,
particularly when some ogres on the Goodlund peninsula are united under
Titans? What about the mystery from the First Dragon War the elves of
Silvanesti uncover as they fight the nightmare? For the most part, the
Heroes of the Lance are not part of this, and few of their descendants
are. No books would be published which makes their appearance look
cheap. The readers' recognition of Dragonlancyness should be based on
the setting, archetypes, creatures and concepts rather than rely on
certain specific characters. The narrative will also stay away from one
big evil army amassing to attack Ansalon. Things are more subtle than
that, and the threat of war is there already from the people that are
already on Ansalon.
These stories would, of course, be told using different media. Based on
rough outlines that weave into each other, there would be trilogies,
stand-alone novels, short story collections and graphic novels. Authors
and artists would be hand-picked based on how well they "get"
Dragonlance as well as how good they are. Of course, there will also be
game products. After the initial book, there would be regional
sourcebooks, such as Northern Ergoth, Solamnia and the Blood Sea Isles.
Organizations that don't fit these books would get their own books. A
sourcebook about the gods and their organizations would focus on the
role of the gods and the consolidation of divine organizations in
post-WotL Ansalon. There would also be a series of modules as well as a
trilogy of computer role-playing games to tell further stories of the
great narrative.
Of course, Time of the Dragons would be re-published and slightly
altered to update it to 3.5. An overall story arc should be developed
for this also, including products such as mentioned above. After some
time, it would turn out that what happens on Ansalon and on Taladas is
related.
Anyway, there it is. Yeah, I realize I just retconned Dragons of Summer
Flame and the Fifth Age, part of the reason being that almost nothing
happened since the Blue Lady's War until the Chaos War. But it *is* my
favorite DL setting, and I would have liked to see it developed,
expanded and *evolved*, using various media. (I have been wanting that
since fini****ng Legends, actually). A guy can dream, right? :)
